Her career began in 1985 with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of California at Davis in Organizational Studies.
'Cheryl is one of the best undergraduate students I have known in the past 12 years.' James ***** Professor of Sociology - University of California - 1985
After a successful and rewarded two year period as a Manager for a large retail chain, she was hired as the General Services Manager for a California municipality. In this job she was responsible for the infra-structure of the City government, including oversight of all contractual agreements with service providers and seven departments with associated staff and budgetary control. As a member of the risk management governing body for a group of sister cities and responsible for claims and risk management, she became the Health and Safety Officer for her municipality, responsible for ensuring that all departments, including Police and Fire, were compliant with employee safety training. During this time she obtained an additional Certificate in Hazardous Materials Management from the University of California at Davis. At the time, this training involved safety officers and top educators in all areas of the Hazardous Materials field, including Waste Management, Toxicology, and Incident Response. She holds certificates in SCBA use and safe Chlorine Handling.
Cheryl developed the first comprehensive employee MSDS Safety
Training for over 600 employees and by her direct intervention employees
were trained on Chlorine Safety two days before a serious Hazardous
Materials chlorine incident.
'The key words which describe Cheryl in my mind are
intelligent, enthusiastic, concerned, personable and dependable. Her
position within the organization required her to oversee a wide variety
of assignments from insurance to communications equipment to employee
safety. In many situations Cheryl had to handle difficult situations
with the public and she did so with concern for the individual without
compromising her responsibility to the organization or herself.' Kris ***** - Employer - City Manager - California City
'Cheryl played a key role in educating the Safety Committee
about new legislation affecting the City, drafted numerous hazardous
materials policies, and educated employees on the City's Hazardous
Communication Plan. In this role, I found Cheryl to be especially adroit
in the areas of organization, planning, and project management. She
also had a unique ability to turn difficult situations into doable
challenges. Lynn ***** - Colleague - California City
